Your downtown Church in Memphis, TN |

|
Our beautiful gothic style sanctuary began from humble beginnings to service the needs of poor immigrants of the Pinch District. It has been an important participant to the history of Memphis. While St. Mary was the second parish in Memphis, it has always been first in the hearts of many throughout the city and ranked first in many achievements down through the years. St. Mary’s opened the first parochial high school in Tennessee in 1887 and in 1889 started a night school providing an opportunity for those who worked to further their education. Students ranged in age from fourteen to thirty and came from all over the city. She was first again in 1912 with a kindergarten for children four to six years of age. The church contains many lovely things such as the altars handmade of wood shipped from Germany, the carved pews, the ornate confessionals, and the frames for the Stations of the Cross. These were mostly made by Franciscan Brothers who traveled wherever the Franciscans had settled to build the church furnishings on the spot. |
