3rd Annual Steeplechase 5K (18JUN11)

The annual 5K downtown run benefits St. Marys Soup Kitchen as well as contributing to the ongoing restoration. The buildings date back to 1806 and part is need of restoration as it was a primary building for housing the sick of the yellow fever epidemic in 1873. One can still see where the sick lay to be nursed and 6 friars and 6 sisters died caring for those that fell ill. St. Marys was the first parochial school opened in the state of Tennessee. With the Influenza Epidemic, World War II and urban renewal, St. Marys future looked bleak. Now, we want to bring back the historical importance of this church, its wonderful love for the community, helping the poor and put a steeple back on this church (The actual steeple had to be removed in 1960 due to wear). We want to proclaim to Memphis hat historically, religiously, and educationally, St. Marys can play a big part in downtown Memphis. The race will again help with the building of new structures, restore the old ones which will help improve existing community, religious and educational services.

SEPTEMBER

Annual Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Commences. This is the process by which adults are initiated into our Roman Catholic community. RCIA describes a process in which men and women are guided and cared for as they awaken in faith and are gradually introduced to the Catholic way of life. The RCIA process is a series of carefully planned stages, marked by liturgical rites in the presence of the whole community, in which new Catholics embark on and join us in a continuing and deepening conversion into faith and discipleship. The RCIA takes the distinctive history and spiritual needs of each person into account, differentiating between the baptized and the unbaptized, the catechized and the uncatechized. The needs of mature, practicing Christians from other faith traditions are considered on an individual basis. The RCIA draws its model from the "catechumenate" of the ancient Church. Becoming Christian in the early days of the Church involved a sharp break with the surrounding culture. New Christians entered into the joy of new life and a life-sharing community of faith, but also entered into a way of living which demanded deep commitment and entailed great risks. In the modern world, our faith also demands deep commitment -- our beliefs and the beliefs of our society are often in tension. The Church revived the catechumenate -- embodied in the RCIA -- because new believers in the modern world need careful preparation and caring support as they enter into the mysteries of Christ and the commitment of Christian living.
